“Shit-hole” is breaking news?
That President Donald J. Trump is an intemperate, loudmouthed racist, who really believes that poor people of color are just shit in their south-of-the-border holes in Africa and Latin America, and that they should stay there – this comes as a surprise?
There was real news that came out of that White House meeting — that Trump had taken back all his earlier on-camera encouragement of “comprehensive immigration reform” (a federal judge’s intervention notwithstanding) and was still threatening to deport some 700,000 DACA-protected people if Congress doesn’t pony up the money for his southern border wall.
But the headlines, the lead stories, the global search for reactions and the probing questions for the panels of experts were all about “shit-hole.”
Trump’s off-the-cuff rekindling of millions of dreams of “paths to citizenship” and perhaps even relief from hundreds of night-raid arrests and greased-lightning deportations turned quickly into not just “tough talk,” but spewing contempt for the bi-partisan Senate proposal that was being presented to him.
But somehow, this bait and switch reversal on a major policy issue seemed less important than the bad words in the rejection spew.
And speaking of obscenity, how can one compare the undeniable immorality of Trump’s hate-filled thoughts and vulgar language with the immorality of his treatment of 700,000 DACA-protected people as bargaining chips. This is transactional contempt, an effective, real-life devaluation of human beings, for whom the President has expressed sympathy and admiration.
Isn’t that worse than more Presidential shit-from-the-lip.
The Washington Post and NBC News, who seem to have led the pack on the “shit-hole” “story,” and Illinois Democrat Senator Dick Durbin who was readiest to propel it forward, look to me like schoolyard monitors who watch a bully take the lunch money from some smaller kids and then run to tell the teacher, “Johnny called Joe a stinkpot.”
And the rest of the news media? They’re just the other second graders who giggle and cry out, “Stinkpot! He said stinkpot, Doody, poopoo, caca, hahaha.”
“So, Senator, Governor, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Archbishop and Academy Award nominee, what did you think when you heard that President Trump had said ‘Shit-hole?’”
I thought, “That asshole!” End of story.
